If you are an aspiring guitarist with dreams of
playing in a band then you need to start thinking very seriously about
the way you practice the guitar... why? Because most guitarists waste a
large percentage of their practice time not really improving.
The funny thing is, most of you want fast results, yet you probably spend more time looking for quick methods and tricks to speed up the process than you would by actually just getting on and doing it. The bottom line is really incredibly simple. If you want to become a great guitarist then you have to spend a lot of time practicing, however...
What's more important is that you spend your practice time actually moving forward and not remaining static or caught up in the guitar rut. There are many things that can make your practice time far more productive than just sitting around noodling while getting better at a snails pace.
One of the most productive methods that can help you improve your guitar playing in the fastest possible time is one that probably get's overlooked the most... just plain old having a blast! Honestly, it can't get any better than that. When you are enjoying yourself, jamming away and just totally getting into it at any level of experience you are guaranteed to just keep on getting better. Jam tracks are undoubtedly the best way to do this but there is only one drawback with them. You need loads of them in many styles and all twelve keys to suit what you are practicing.
The best way around that is to use a drum machine, one which you can select a style, punch in a tempo and start practicing. The only problem with a lot of drum machines is they can be far too mechanical sounding. Even that's better than nothing but there's one thing you just can't beat, (no pun intended) playing with a real drummer! If you can do that then you just can't help having a blast, your enthusiasm and feel good factor is just so high that you won't be able to stop yourself getting better every time you pick up the guitar.
Now unless you happen to have enough money to buy your own island then it's unlikely you'll also have your own in house drummer sitting around waiting for you whenever you want to pick up the guitar. The good news however is you can have the next best thing. If you are going to spend time practicing the guitar then you may as well be getting better at the same time!
